The Tale of the (Fe)Male Sun tells the story of the rise and fall of hierarchical beauty standards in Southwest Asia and North Africa through mythologies, anecdotes, history, Qajar paintings, handcolored photographs, with cassette and vinyl covers. What rises from the pages is the story of how a little star in the cosmos transformed into an almighty sun, both female and male. In their light, nonbinary gender expressions in painting, music, and dance flourished, nurtured by the desire of royals and artists. But over time, the gendertranscending sun came to be eclipsed by a new, faceless sun. Now in the shadows, but not forgotten, the (fe)male sun occasionally sneaks out from behind the faceless sun – like in this book – reminding us of their former glory. All in the hope that one day, we will greet this sun again, like an old friend shining by our side.

A narrative dance game in which an exiled non-binary sun strips to earn money for a new face. Three friends – an Iranian-Swedish elephant, an Esfahani dragon and a Persian-wannabe lion – visit this strip club in Beirut, and step by step their bodies start to alter. 
Stripper Sun explores how bodies in exile negotiate joy, desire, and the possibility of remaking themselves under new skies. The animations draw on Iranian social dance and miniature painting, accompanied by music inspired by Tehrangeles pop and reggaeton.

In The Savor of a Sweet Surprise, two siblings invite the audience to take part in an interactive performance where they decorate halva—a Persian dessert—together. Infused with surprises, the act of decoration becomes a magical portal, allowing the siblings to take on the forms of animals. A transformation they learned from their grandmother—the master of the art of disappearance. Through stories, choreographies, and food, the piece explores how kitsch and decoration can become social strategies for both escape and remembrance.

Mural: Leo’s Tail, Eyebrowed SunInspired by mosaic decorations in several mosques and palaces, the lion and the sun together form a powerful expression resembling an emblematic symbol, a coat of arms. In Iranian history, this pairing can be traced back to astrology – the sun in the house of Leo – and has come to symbolise divine authority, royal power and beauty. Originally, the sun was portrayed with beautiful curly hair, a moustache and almond-shaped eyes, but with imperialism, such an ambiguous ideal of beauty could not represent a nation, and the face was eclipsed. After the 1979 revolution, Iran replaced the national emblem; despite this, the lion and the sun remain a strong symbol of Iranian heritage and Iranian nationalism. Nordlöf Malekian revives the sun’s original characteristics and reactivates the lion in several recent works, in which he explores what happens when animals and celestial bodies are given a human face.Sculpture: A Lion’s TailHere, the tail of lion functions as a displaced emblem of royalty and nationhood, where astrological symbolism becomes a vehicle for queer reinterpretation.

When I renewed my passport in Karaj, Iran, over a decade ago, the photographer decided I looked “too feminine” for an official document—
and yet, somehow, his retouching made me look even more feminine. –

In the lecture performance The Lion’s Tail, Afrang Nordlöf Malekian
explores manipulation of passport photography through his own
passport photos, along archival findings at the Arab Image Foundation
in Beirut – hand colored photographs from the 1940s to the ’80s, with
saturated shades of magentas, blues, and reds. Through a mixture of research, storytelling, and choreography, he traces retouching techniques to a mythologized sun, both female and male, shining beside a lion—an ancient couple from the depths of the universe: the sun in the
house of Leo.

						
In my search for the origin of these photography retouching techniques, I
uncovered something else—something profound that led me to an exiled

EAS (Emergency Alert of Specters) is a series of nine dream poems in electronic trumpet-shaped sculptures that radiate dreams of those who migrated to Sweden in the 60s and 90s, many with socialist aspirations. The work builds upon the artist’s research at the Public Art Agency Sweden’s extensive archive of prints from 1960– 1990, specifically the dream poems that were part of the exhibition “Suddenly It Happens!” (2023).

People of different ages and backgrounds have read the dream poems in the work to give voice to various migratory experiences of unrealized socialist utopia by both the people who directly migrated and the ones who inherited those dreams. For this exhibition, they were also recorded in Farsi and English to voice an even more comprehensive range of languages, hence experiences.

For many migrant groups, music is a way to stay in touch with their roots. The poems&#38;nbsp;are accompanied&#38;nbsp;by various pieces by the Iranian trumpeter Manouchehr Biglari and composer Fariborz Lachini, where the&#38;nbsp;speed of the original music has been slowed down and altered by the artist.

The shapes of the 3D-printed sculptures are inspired&#38;nbsp;by horns associated&#38;nbsp;with postal offices. This connection stems partly from the fact that many prints in&#38;nbsp;the Public Art Agency Archive once hung in such spaces but also because the sculptures embody messages that never fully arrived. They are like suitcases&#38;nbsp;filled with dreams—encapsulated breaths—still waiting to come home. Like ghosts, they&#38;nbsp;echo through Röda Sten Konsthall. The trumpet shape becomes a symbol of how something as vital, mundane, and invisible as breathing can, through a simple sigh, offer relief.

For many years, residents of Gränby and Kvarngärdet in Uppsala have fought against sharp rent increases and renovictions*. This is also the case in the sound work "The Garden Greives My Heart," where flowers, juniper bushes, and other vegetation in the city break the silence to depict tenants' urban living conditions.
*To significantly raise rents by renovating rental properties, resulting in involuntary relocation.

Artist Afrang Nordlöf Malekian’s work departs from the history of the lottery tickets and Public Art Agency Sweden’s print archive. He puts a selection of nine prints from the collection in dialogue with newly produced works in the form of lottery tickets, dream poems, sound works, and performances. In the performance and exhibition Suddenly It Happens!, the artist looks at the exploitation of people’s hopes and dreams in the capitalist system. The juxtaposition between lottery tickets and print archives is based on Grafikens Hus’ collaboration with the Penninglotteriet (State Lottery) between 1995 and 1998 when 75 print artworks were commissioned and reproduced in miniature on lottery tickets.


The Public Art Agency Sweden hosts an extensive archive of prints from 1960-1990. These were previously on display in schools, workplaces, and public offices, making them accessible to hundreds of thousands of people through everyday interactions. Print as an accessible art form has also enabled more people to have art in their homes – a way of “democratizing” art. Today, there is a growing number of prints in the Public Art Agency Swede’s archive – a consequence of the privatization of public services. There is simply far less wall space for displaying public art today.


Afrang Nordlöf Malekian selected prints in the archive that seem to convey dreams and longings for a non-capitalist world. The artist approaches the print collection as a place filled with hope for a different life, one that is far from increasing consumerism. For the artist, dreams of possible living conditions are found within the prints. They haunt the collection like ghosts, waiting to bloom in another existence beyond capitalism, where democracy flourishes.


Lotteries have always been a playground with people’s dreams and fantasies as game tiles. In the exhibition, the ideas of “luck” and “waiting” are seen as concepts of what is yet to come. As the artist writes in one of the poems: “what a beautiful dream about the day when it is our turn”. But do we really get happy when dreams come true? Or has society taught us that happiness is found in the consumption of dreams? Afrang Nordlöf Malekian portrays this through the work Grafiken lott (The Chance of the Graphics), where made-up lottery tickets play a key role in the exhibition and alludes to the promise of happiness: to realize a dream through winning the lottery, which in this case is illustrated as being able to have art in one’s home. In The Promise of Happiness (2010), theorist Sara Ahmed discusses the expectations of being happy by society. She describes this as a duty, where living one’s life is merely accommodating society’s acceptability. According to Ahmed, not choosing to be happy is an act of resistance. 


Migrational perspectives permeate the artist’s work and are seen in the selection of prints from the archive as well as within the exhibition itself. He is interested in the stories of people who migrated to Sweden in the 60s and 90s, many with socialist aspirations. The print archive of the Public Art Agency Sweden is clearly influenced by Sweden’s socialist past, but the experiences and perspectives of migrants, especially the working class, are absent from the archive.


The philosopher Jacques Derrida coined the term “Hauntology” in his book Specters of Marx (1993), merging ontology, the study of being in general (what exists), and the concept of haunting. He argues that what exists yet is not allowed to be present will haunt and disturb as long as it is excluded. Derrida was also interested in the idea of the ghost as a being that, through its hauntings, is both present and absent simultaneously, disrupting time and space. Like Derrida, Afrang Nordlöf Malekian is interested in these disruptions and the idea that absence also means a strong and pulsating presence. This can be expressed as dreams that haunt us with a longing for a bygone era, in music from a migrant’s childhood, a former telecommunications office in Sundsvall, or the print archive of the Public Art Agency Sweden. The absent voices within the collection thus haunt the archive and, by extension, our collective history. This absence haunts the stories manifested by the graphics collection.


A ghost is haunting the archive—the ghost of anti-capitalists’ dreams.

Dream poems that the artist wrote in dialogue with nine prints from the Public Art Agency Print Collection. They voice migratory ghosts of socialism, akin to a lingering specter without a definite beginning or end. The artist has approached their creation through the logic of this specter – a state neither fully alive nor deceased. The characters within these poems serve as voices that haunt the archive, shedding light on the migrants who arrived to Sweden with their socialist dreams yet are conspicuously absent within the print collection.



The color in the works follows a gradient, from purple to pink, which portrays the passing of a ghost. Each print sheet constitutes a shade of this gradient.

In this work, Afrang Nordlöf Malekian draws inspiration from the lottery tickets that Grafikens hus produced in collaboration with Penninglotteriet (State Lottery) during the 1990s. Grafikens hus invited artists to decorate the lottery tickets with print-made artworks to make more art available to the masses. In The Chance of the Prints, the artist explores how printmaking was used in gambling. On the last day of the exhibition, a collection of specially produced lottery tickets awaits its turn at a dramatized lottery performance. In this performance, the audience is invited to gamble on a selection of prints from the Public Art Agency Print Archive, raising questions about the relationship between loss and gain when something public becomes private.

On the back of the work/lottery ticket, parts of the work Playing Kids (1970) by the artist Berta Hansson appears together with one of Afrang Nordlöf Malekian’s dream poems.

This performance explores the relationship between profit and loss in relation to collective assets. As an audience member, you are invited to a dramatized lottery drawing where you can gamble on prints from the Public Art Agency Sweden Archive and the artist’s newly created collection of dream poems: a line that promises something else. An actor leads the lottery and embodies a specter of socialism from 1970s Sweden. Throughout the performance, different narrators are heard voicing the dream poems and conveying various migratory experiences. The pomegranate is a fruit of life, death, and rebirth. It can take the shape of a golden necklace hidden in a grandmother’s bra during the aftermath of the 1979 revolution in Iran. Or it can be peeled and offered by another woman to her migrant granddaughter. In the performance The Taste of Pomegranate, participants are invited to peel and deseed pomegranates on top of a pomegranate-illustrated tablecloth with printed stories of myths and migration about this precious fruit, spanning from Cyprus to an airport in Tehran, en route to Scandinavia. With sticky hands, and red stains of pomegranates spread across the tablecloth, the seeds of stories pass through the bodies of different people and transform into entities that reach further and wider—leaving a trace of history.











Embroidery tracing pomegranate stains from previous performances of “The Taste of Pomegranate,” was made specifically for the exhibition at Bonniers konsthall, 2025-2026, as an act of history writing. Altogether, creating a pattern which resembles a map.
